TERRA MATER
WRITTEN BY JEFFREY R HILTON
OCTOBER 2018
IN THE GROWING TWILIGHT
SURROUNDED BY DARKENING SILENCE
THE MOUNTAINS JAGGED SILHOUETTES
AGAINST THE MOON AND SKY
FLAMES LEAP UP INTO THE NIGHT
THE CAMPFIRE LIKE A BEACON
CALLING OUT
ANNOUNCING MY PRESENCE
TO ANY AND ALL
I MAINTAIN A CALCULATED VIGILANCE
WHILE I INHALE THE ENTIRETY OF THIS PLACE
ITS FRESH COLD SCENTED AIR INTOXICATING
THE AURORA SHOWS GREEN AND BLUE
RIBBONS THAT DANCE IN THE SKY
AS THOUGH BLOWN BY THE WINDS
AN ALMOST EERIE MAGIC
FALLS OVER THE LAND
ONE YOU CAN BOTH SEE AND FEEL
HARDLY REAL MAKES YOU FEEL
HUMBLE AND SMALL
STANDING THERE LOOKING UP
IN THE MIDDLE OF IT ALL
RIGHT THERE IN THE NIGHT
THERE IS NO WRONG
WHILE EVEN SONG PLAYS
SINGING PRAISE
TO THE GODDESS TERRA MATER
WHILE THE STARS ALL LOOK ON
SHE NEITHER FORGIVES OR FORGETS
SHE SERVES UP BEAUTY
OR HANDS OUT REGRETS
OH BUT THIS NIGHT
DOESN'T OWE A SOUL
ALTHOUGH IT MAY OWN A FEW
IT FLOWS TOO FREELY
CRACKING DAWN
AND IN ITS GATHERING LIGHT
I AWAKEN FROM A DREAM
SOMEWHERE I'VE NEVER BEEN
SOMETHING I'VE NEVER SEEN
NOW THE SUNS CALLING ME
I CAN FEEL ITS DRAW
CARESSED BY WINDS SOFT AND WARM
SUCCUMBING TO THEIR CHARM
INTO ITS BRIGHT GLOW
LOOK INSIDE SEE THE END
BRING IT BACK AND START AGAIN
IN THE DARKNESS BEFORE THE DAWN
THE DAY IS STILL LONG
