Blowing In The Sun

BLOWING IN THE SUN

WRITTEN BY: J.R HILTON

2017

THE SUN IS COMING CLOSER ONCE AGAIN
BRINGING US ANOTHER SUMMER
WILL IT SHINE IN GOLDEN LIGHT
SWEET DAYS THAT NEVER END
UNTIL THE MOON AND THE STARS TAKE THE STAGE
MOON FLOWERS BLOWING SCENTED ON A GENTLE BREEZE
FIRES COME TO LIFE ONE BY ONE
LIGHT THE DARKNESS FROM YOUR HAPPY PLACE

WINTER WAS WAY TOO LONG
NOW THE WAITING'S GONE
FIELDS OF GREEN, BLOOMING MEADOWS
BLOWING IN THE SUN
BRIDGE TO NOWHERE
IN THE MIDDLE OF A SHINING SUMMER
IN GOLDEN LIGHT
THIS COULD TAKE AWHILE
THIS COULD TAKE ALL NIGHT

AS STARS APPEAR ONE BY ONE
UNTIL THE SKIES ARE FULL OF BURNING LIGHT
FARAWAY FROM THE CITY
AND IT LOOKS ALRIGHT
EVERY LITTLE PART OF ME
ENTRENCHED IN SUMMER. SO NATURALLY
HEARTBEAT OF SUMMER THROBBING IN THE SUN
BREATHING IN THE SEASON ALL AT ONCE
TURNING FASTER EVERYDAY

WHEN IT ALL WINDS UP
THERE'S A QUIET SADNESS
HATE WHEN IT'S ALL OVER AND DONE
LIKE LOSING A LOVER, JUST WAITING FOR ANOTHER
IN THE FADING LIGHT
BUT IF YOU COULD SEE THROUGH THIS SMILE
YOU'D SEE THE SADNESS, AND YOU'D KNOW WHY
AT THE END OF EACH GOODBYE

GOODBYE GOLDEN LIGHT
STILL DON'T MAKE IT RIGHT
WHEN THE COLD WINDS OF NOVEMBER COME
NO MORE MOON FLOWERS BLOWING IN THE SUN
NO SUMMER RAIN
A SKY WITHOUT A RAINBOW JUST AIN'T THE SAME
YOU'D THINK I'D HAVE LEARNED BY NOW
BUT THAT KIND OF SOLUTION
DON'T DO NOTHING TO SATISFY
WAITING FOR ALL THESE MONTHS TO GO BY
TO GET TO MOON FLOWERS BLOWING IN THE SUN
I HATE WHEN IT'S DONE

My lyrics to: FIND THE SUMMER (THAT NEVER ENDS)

FIND THE SUMMER
(THAT NEVER ENDS)

WRITTEN BY: J.R HILTON JUNE 2016

I SEE A PICTURE OF SOMETHING OR SOMEWHERE
I WANT TO GO, INSTEAD OF THE PLACES I'VE BEEN
SOMETHING NEW TO DREAM
PLANTING THE SEEDS, I'VE NEVER SEEN, IN MY HEAD
WOULD YOU GO THERE WITH ME
IT'S BEST IF YOU'RE AT MY SIDE
BECAUSE YOU AND I HAVE GOT THIS THING
WHAT IT TAKES WE BRING

CHORUS

WE'RE COMING THROUGH ON A SOUTHEAST WIND
HEAR THE WIND CHIMES PLAY AGAIN
AS THE WAVES CARESS THE SAND
HEY WE STILL CAN DREAM
AND YOU STILL MEAN EVERYTHING
FIND THE SUMMER THAT NEVER ENDS
AND I WILL FOLLOW, AND STOP RIGHT THERE
AND STAY RIGHT THERE, FOR THE REST OF TIME
IF ONLY I HAD THAT, IT WAS YOURS AND MINE
PLANTING THE SEEDS I'VE NEVER SEEN IN MY HEAD
AND TOSSING AWAY THE ONES THAT ARE DEAD

I WAKE UP AND STILL HEAR THE CALL OF THE SEA
I STILL HEAR THE WHISTLES AND BELLS
I CAN SEE THE SHINGLE BEACHES COVERED IN SHELLS
THE SALTY KISS OF THE SEA, NEVER FAR AWAY
MAN IT'S JUST A DIFFERENT WORLD
ONE THAT TURNS ME TOWARDS MY FINEST HOURS
YOU AND I MAY HAVE TO GO
I THINK I KNOW YOU WOULD
WE'D ALREADY BE THERE IF WE COULD

Muse On Summers Day

Muse On Summers Day

Written by: J.R Hilton

Today, I watched a Hawk soar high above me. I admired the clouds reflected in still water. I watched a young bird not yet versed in the art of flight, hop and skip away from me in his imagined danger. I watched green leaves flutter in the warm breeze and felt the sun on my skin. I saw ducks lazing in the afternoon sun and a lone goose preening on the shore. I watched butterflies light on flowers. I let nature soothe my soul, sight, sound and feelings. I saw the river running high and swiftly. Nature is my Church and my solace.

Gardener At Heart

In The Garden Shed

Dahlia

Ah,  winter!  The gardening chores are long finished now and it's time to curl up by the fire with some gardening magazines and  start making plans and take notes for this years garden and flower beds. Order up some seeds online from McKenzie's,  Stokes,  or Thompson/Morgan's.

What kind of changes will you make in 2012?   Will you try growing some of the latest new tomato varieties that are always popping up or stick to your old time proven favorite?   Switch to raised bed gardening?  Rotate your crops?  Build a new garden shed or revitalize your old one?  Install a pond?

Try growing something new?  I planted some spring flowering bulbs in the fall, and am anxious to see how that works out,  especially because I bought at least one grab bag of mixed tulip bulbs unmarked as to what variety and color they are.

I grew up on a farm,  and our garden there was easily the size of a football field and everything that could possibly be grown was.  Flowers were everywhere,  including the garden along with the vegetables. A lot of the flowers and shrubs were later recreated into my own gardens.  Things I enjoyed when I was growing up like Corn Flowers, Snowball Viburnum,  Poppies, and Lily of the Valley and even Ferns. I can still remember the our garden shed,  we called the Berry House.  All the hoes, rakes  spades,  a tiller,  3 mowers, axes,  berry baskets, bushel baskets,  gasoline,  seed, cord, and all other manner of gardening implements and even a bit of pesticide for the potato bugs.  I used to like the strange mixed aroma of the berry House. I wondered how we ever managed to get in and out of there with so much stuff packed into it.

I always lean heavily towards perennials because they make good economic sense and most can be divided later on a continuing periodical basis.
Annuals that reseed themselves like Poppies and Viola's are a good choice too.

I was a resident gardener for a time in England, and worked for a reputable commercial gardening and landscaping company for a season.  Being from Canada, I had to quickly learn about all the plants, trees and shrubs that are native to England that you don't usually see here in Canada.  I was able to continue gardening all winter for at least one of my years there,   with the usually favorable climate on the South Coast,  and that was an enjoyable first for me.

Even two different colors can create high drama

Ring A Tree With Spring Flowering Crocus

Build a rock garden this spring if you don't already have one. I once built a rock garden and a rock wall using only large field stones that I gathered from a empty field where a new neighborhood would be built.  It was hard work but I managed to ferry a few hundred rocks to my house with my pickup truck for free.

Make a 3 sided trellis to hide an ugly feature in your yard and plant with climbing Roses.  If you live in a colder zone, try hardy Explorer Roses. One day while working as a gardener,  I was dropped off at a park where to my surprise,  I had to prune over 500 Rose bushes myself in the hot sun. Snippety snip, snip,  I had to move at a clip.  A wee bit taxing,  but the job got done and talk about practice.

Gardening is a stress reliever and if you are anything like me,  you can easily lose track of time while tending the garden.  There's nothing like getting your hands into the warm summer soil of the garden and in essence, being in touch with nature. One spring I placed a birdhouse on top of an arbor in my garden and was rewarded with a pair of Bluebirds that nested there all summer and performed acrobatics nearby while I gardened. that was the only Bluebirds I ever had in any of my gardens and they are beautiful birds to look at.

Wishing you a bountiful and productive 2012 in the garden.

Do Have A Good Day And See You There.

Miles Down Memory Lane

Miles Down Memory Lane

Written by : Jeffrey R Hilton

Is it just me or did summers used to last longer when we were younger ?  Without a doubt,  summer is my favorite time of the year and always was.  The memories of summers past conjure up all kinds of images and stir up all kinds of emotions. The majority of them thankfully are good.

Laying in the front field, a small grassy section along the highway on the farm watching airshows overhead for free, as the airport was close by.

Getting bronzed by the sun as we harvested and such.
Playing with dinky toys under the big oak near the house, a makeshift sand box around the tree. Running amok playing war or cowboys.

I remember when I was young enough and my imagination was such that I would stand on top of an old combine that was derelict and rusting. Surrounded by a tall field of grass, I would pretend that I was the captain of my own ship and the surrounding grasses looked like waves as they blew in the wind. I discovered faraway lands astride that old combine.

I used to fancy myself an explorer and regularly hiked every inch of the property of that farm and especially the few woods  we had there. Exploring, observing and tracking animals.
Apparently my wanderlust developed early as I tried to run away when I was three years old and was caught nearing the highway after walking the long main driveway.

This driveway was lined by sumac bushes all the way down and we were warned at an early age not to eat the poisoned berries. However, the canes of these sumac's.
I soon found out made good bows and arrows and whittled lots of arrows after making a bow. I hunted with them.
Something else I did with them was long forgotten until a few years ago, when my younger brother reminded me that I had made him put on a bunch of  coats one time and shot a bunch of arrows at him for practice.
Um..I did that ? Okay so obviously my brother remembers it better than I do.

I was constantly running into other farm kids that were finding arrowheads in their fields in the area so I was constantly on the lookout for these and hunted for them. Sadly, I never did find one on our farm.
In one of the fields there were wild strawberries every summer to pig out one. They were tiny but so sweet.

Our garden was easily the size of a football field and it would be harder to list what we didn't grow there.
This was an inspiration to me to fill my wagon up with vegetables, then pull it across the road and into the newly built small subdivision, going door to door selling vegetables. My first entrepreneurial experience. Probably would have been my last if my Grandparents had found me out.

On my 8th birthday, I was presented a new bike. A bigger one. I learned to ride it on the farm then I thought I would ride it along the side road near the farm.I was happy and whistling a tune and out of nowhere, a huge German Shepherd was flying through the air at me. As he hit me,his teeth sank into my leg and when we landed in the ditch he punctured my foot and ripped my runner off. I wasn't to happy that day. I still have scars from that one.

We rode our bikes all summer and often rode to a creek that was miles away down a country road. There was one particular farm we knew well. You had to pedal your ass off and as you went by you put your feet up on the cross bar as the dog that lived there always chased us as we went by. We got to the creek and would splash up and down it for miles catching crayfish and salamanders and swimming to keep cool.

We would cross over to a neighbor's farm where I would visit my German friends. They had a pony and we would sometimes take it into the woods and pretend we were cowboys. We would even take a can of beans and build a fire to heat them up on the trail.
Other times we would race our soapbox cars down a hill on their farm and into the creek.

Near the farm house, we had a tangle of bushes and trees and there was a grapevine that was over a hundred years old. The vines were so thick that we used to swing around on them like Tarzan. The grapes were huge Concord grapes.

Summers were king then and they still are now, but I think they are shorter.
