Massacre In Biddulph County - The Black Donnelly's

Growing up in in the City of London Ontario, it wasn't far to the sleepy little town of Lucan Ontario.  I remember the first time I went to Lucan.  A neighbor who was an avid sportsman kindly took me on my first real fishing trip to Lucan. Bob Simpson, Bless him,  took me up there and we caught a whole string of pike.  They put up a hell of a fight and in spite of all the bones were delicious. We had to walk through a woods to get to the fishing hole and past an old disused rail line and I remember there was even an old caboose on the track.  For a summers day,  I recall that it seemed almost eerily silent around there.  Perhaps it was only a silent whisper from the past.  After all,  one of the most horrendous mass murders in Ontario's history took place there.

I learned a few years later about a strange senseless tragedy that had befallen a family of Irish emigrants from Tipperary named Donnelly that met their end there.  James and Johanna Donnelly had come to Canada about 1845,  eager to start a family,  settle and obtain land on which they could farm and earn a living.  Most of the family ended up being brutally slaughtered by a so called group of townsfolk called the Biddulph Peace Society ,  who had turned into a vicious vigilante group instead,  armed with clubs,  spades,  at least one gun and various other farm implements that could be used as weapons.

They showed up at the Donnelly residence on the old Roman Line,  the road so named for the large amount of Roman Catholics that had settled in the area,  and they were thirsty for blood and bent on killing every family member there.  By the time of this murder, the Donnelly's family had grown to nine.  That night on February 4,  1880,  this group of cold hearted murderous conspirators gathered and systematically beat and killed 5 family members at the house including James,  his wife Johanna,  young niece Bridget,  brothers,  John and Tom. John Jr. had hidden beneath the bed behind a clothes basket and witnessed a lot of the carnage including one of his brothers that had gotten out of the house and was beaten back in where John Jr. heard one of the vigilantes told another one to finish him off with the spade he was holding.  He promptly smashed his skull in completing the job.

With this done,  they set the house ablaze and  they set off to another one of James sons houses about 7 miles away. Will was the eldest son and lived with his wife Nora. At about 2 am they heard someone outside shouting fire come on out. Will had company that night. it was another brother that had come to help Will.  When Will's brother opened the door he was shot full of lead and collapsed back into the house. Will and Nora panicked but the vigilante's figured they had shot Will and that was their intent,  so after awhile of talking outside they left,  and the list went up to 6 dead that night.

The vigilantes in part were identified as being James Carrol,  a Police Constable.  John Kennedy and James Ryder Jr..  They were believed to be the ring leaders and it was a ruse by the constable of claiming they were there to arrest John Sr. and one of his sons that was already shackled in the kitchen where it's believed he was killed while still shackled.  Strangely,  the next day,  the heads had been cut off and carried away, grisly prizes of the vigilantes themselves no doubt and attributed to looters and curiosity seekers.  This prevented any forensic findings.  Some of the people involved were in high standing in the community and were thought to be a break off group working alone unbeknownst to the Catholic Parish Priest,  Father Connolly, whom was a part of the Biddulph Peace Society. I think it was one of the biggest conspiracies of it's time.

The Donnelly's were squatters on the land they settled and cleared like many people of that time.  The landowner was absent for years and eventually sold 25 acres of his land to someone and it happened to be the same 25 James had settled on. This started a feud that ended in the courts.  The Donnelly's over the years developed a bad reputation and eventually were blamed for anything and everything. James Sr. was even sentenced to hang for killing a man that had goaded him into a fight. It was said that James had a hand spike in his fist that left a hole in his rival,  Patrick Farrell's skull.  Patrick was the man that had bought the 25 acres.  With James's wife's help, she got his sentence reduced to 7 - 9 years.  That must have taken some doing in the 1870's. Otherwise he would have swung to his death in 1858 in the City Of London. James initially evaded capture for nearly a year before giving himself up.

I believe that the Donnelly family were no angels but the townsfolk despised them because they didn't put up with anyone's crap and stood up to any and all.  One things for sure,  they never deserved to die like that. The people in the town of Lucan were tight lipped about these murders for years and tried to cover it over.  I remember myself trying to ask someone in town years ago about the incident for a book report and was totally blanked. Of course with a lot of the murderers families still living in the area,  they didn't want to be associated with any of it.  The trials were an absolute farce and no one was ever charged with these murders. There's a lot more to this story than I have given you here and it's really quite interesting and shall we say.. a little macabre.

It is said that even today,  horses won't ride past the Donnelly homestead after midnight and that their ghosts have been seen hovering low in the fields there.
2011 marked the 131st anniversary of the massacre.

You can read a more in-depth account about this story at www.donnelly's.com,   find it on Wikipedia or try to find some of the books posted above. There are several.

Winston & Watson Finch Update

From the Left Winston and Watson

Winston and Watson are well settled in now in their corner of the living room where their antics don't go unnoticed easily and they are a constant source of amusement. Winston being the first Finch purchased, is slightly older than Watson and he flies around the cage a bit and only lands on perches unless he wants something on the floor of the cage, or to land on a food or water cup.  Watson however is a different bird altogether. He's like a little Kamikaze,  he lands on perches alright but he also flies at the front of the cage and lands on the wire,  or lands on the top of the cage roof to get to the top of the millet.  Winston seemed fine with this and content to let Watson show off his acrobatics until recently.  Now he's finally copied Watson's idea and is trying to get it but instead of landing on the front of the cage wire he flies at it,  stops and hovers a second then takes off the other way.

Like any finches,  they benefit from,  and love the deluxe seed mix,  I mix the deluxe seed into the cheaper seed,  so that it's not too rich and it goes farther.  That and along with millet sprays,  they seem to be thriving.  I'm starting to experiment with putting a few small pieces of vegetables. I've just begun with this and tried some broccoli and they didn't seem interested this time around.  It doesn't hurt to offer them bits of fruit as well now and again.  You just have to experiment until you hit on something they like.

I  had offered the birds a bath at least once a week since I got them and they showed no interest in it other than to have a drink from it. I left it in the cage for a few hours each time and then removed it.  Just yesterday a bath was offered to them again and Watson checked it out first as he is more adventurous but yet more skittish of the two.  He jumped in finally and started bathing in earnest.  Of course Winston soon got in on the action.  It was like watching two little kids at a wading pool,  thrashing around in the water and chirping up a storm and having a great time.  Watson stayed in the whole time and the longest and Winston was in twice for two short baths. Content they landed on the lower perches and I made a mental note to cover the wall behind the cage by putting a towel over the cage at the back as they shake off the excess water much like dogs do and splattered the wall with water.  I will offer them the bath once a week now and I'm sure they will use it now.

Out of the two nests on offer to them,  they prefer the covered roof one best and only use the open nest for lounging in occasionally.  When I first got these guys,  I put some hay in their nests and put some on the floor of the cage for them to add more as they pleased , but they were not interested so I added it myself.  Lately however at least once a week now I add a small pile of hay on the floor of the cage and as soon as I put it in,  they go to work taking turns adding it to the nest until it's all in there. If they drop it, they immediately go and retrieve it and try again.  Without trying to sound too boring,  this is fun to watch. they always go in turn and are like little construction workers.

Both birds have  different calls and songs if you want to call what they do songs. I went for a walk today at a reservoir to try out my new camera and ended up picking up three pieces of driftwood that I took home.  I've made one into a natural perch just like the ones they sell in pet stores with just a few small bits I had on hand,  and installed it in their cage.  They love it and it's a smaller diameter than their perches which is better for their little feet.

They have been trying to mate each other lately and as two males, I'm not sure this is a good thing.  If I put a female in there now,  she will have to be big,  bold and bossy so she can take a round out of these two if they get too frisky with her.  For now I'm not planning on getting a hen just yet,  so these two bozo's will have to learn how to cool off.

Poetry

Poetry; whether it was written as a song or a poem,  it still has a quality to shape the world and whisk you off to a place of contentment.  Poetry is a journey that transcends time and thought.  Poetry goes back a long,  long time and some of the earliest poetry published dates from 1250 and is Scottish and English.  It is my good fortune to own what surely must be a rare book of poetry.  It was originally purchased in London England at Paternoster Row and was published in 1880. I have included a few pictures of the book here. A lot of the poems are from the master poet and father of poetry himself;   Geoffrey Chaucer.

When is the last time you read a poem by a famous poet?  Pick a famous poet and read a few poems.   I recommend reading list.

Robert Frost
Walt Whitman
E.E Cummings
Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Emily Dickinson
Margaret Atwood
Edgar Allan Poe

Try to find a poet for yourself that you can relate with.  The writing styles are as many as the poets themselves.

I remember being in an English class as an adult completing my grade 12, and having finished an assignment early,  I was staring out the window at a huge old oak tree and quickly penned a poem about it. To my astonishment and horror the teacher had crept up behind me and had read it over my shoulder and squealed with delight to the whole class that I had written a poem about her favorite tree and we were now going outside to the tree where I would be reciting the poem to the class and the teacher.  As shy as I am,  I got through it to a hardy round of applause.

Published 1888

At the risk of embarrassing my shy self,  here is a sample of my own poetry and written for use as a song lyric. I've been actively writing song poems since I was 15 years old.  Most have been lost along the highway of life and my dream of becoming  a successful song writer  is slipping away but I still love to write songs and probably always will.  Wordsmith,  Poet,  Lyricist,  whatever label you attach to it,  the challenge of weaving words into spun gold poetry that is heartfelt by readers is a magic only a few artistic and creative people attain.

SMILE FOR THE ROAD
Written by: Jeffrey Robert Hilton
Jan 5/2012

YOU CAME TO ME IN THE SETTING SUN,  WE'LL SEE WHERE THIS ALL LEADS TO.
ANOTHER PATH WE TAKE THE CHANCE
WHO WANTS TO BE ALONE ANYWAY.
I'VE BEEN THERE AND I DON'T CARE FOR IT.
NEWSPAPER BLOWING DOWN THE STREET
DANCER ON THE WIND,  CAN'T FIND HIS FEET.
LIKE SOME GHOST THAT LOST HIS WAY,  THAT WAS ME.
I'VE BEEN A WINNER, I'VE LOST TO
NO ODDS TO ME,  NO ODDS TO YOU.
I'VE TRAVELED FAR THIS IS ME,  JUST THE CLOTHES ON MY BACK.
FOLLOWED THE ROAD THAT LED AWAY.
CAME BACK ON THE SAME ONE,  JUST GOT IN TODAY.
MUCH EXPERIENCE AND THINGS I LEARNED
THAT I'D RATHER NOT HAVE KNOWN.
BUT LIFE WAS INSISTENT THAT I WOULD BE SHOWN

HOW COULD ALL THESE THINGS HAVE COME TO PASS.
HAS IT REALLY BEEN SO LONG,  I DIDN'T THINK SO
I WAS WRONG.
WELL ON THE OTHER SIDE,  LOOKING DOWN FROM THIS HIGH PLACE
WITH SOME TREPIDATION, A SMILE ON MY FACE.
COMING TO CONCLUSION,  LENDING TO ALLUSION
KNOWING IT DOESN'T ALWAYS HAVE TO END SO BAD.
THE DREAMS ARE GETTING CLEARER NOW.
THE COLORS TAKE ON SHAPES OF THINGS I KNOW I KNOW.
SO I'LL SIT HERE AND ANALYZE WHILE YOU GO ABOUT YOUR DAY
THEN BRING IT HOME AND MAKE IT PART OF MINE
AND MAYBE I COULD EVEN LEARN TO STAY.
A SMILE FOR THE ROAD,  WILL TAKE YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO GO.

BELIEVE IN US,  BELIEVE WE'LL KEEP THESE CARDS WE'VE DRAWN
WE'VE COME TO FAR TO LET THIS GO.
COME TO FAR AND WE BOTH KNOW.
RUNNING DOESN'T GET YOU VERY FAR.
BELIEVE IN US,  BELIEVE IN WHAT WE'RE DOING.
BELIEVE THAT THIS,  CRUSH WON'T FALL AND END IN RUIN.
BE ON MY SIDE,  IT'S JUST FATE UNLESS IT LIED.

THIS FACE IS GETTING OLDER
THE WINTERS SEEM MUCH LONGER AND COLDER.
A SMILE FOR THE ROAD WE'RE ON,  LET'S KEEP IT ON.
IN ONE PLACE WITH SOMEONE,  THAT LOVES YOU BACK AS MUCH
MAKES IT SOMETHING REAL,  THAT RISES ABOVE
ALL THE WHEAT AND CHAFF.
THAT MADE YOU CRY AND MADE YOU LAUGH
LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO WONDER WHY.

By The Sea

Southsea

Living by the sea is a dream I've always had living most of my life in landlocked Calgary Alberta. The salty taste of the sea on your lips in the breeze and on your skin.
Watching boats of every size and description passing me by while I sit on the beach, content with life. My skin warm from drinking up every drop the sun has to offer as it shimmers on the gentle rollers breaking against the shore, creeping ever closer with the rising tide.I walk down the beach with my head down scanning the shingle for unusual stones or perhaps some small treasure that's has washed up away from prying eyes. The sea draws me near her every chance she gets and I succumb to her persistent voice.  She draws me right into her restless expanse and I go willingly but wary of her. I bravely swim out past my comfort zone and begin to feel the strong pull of the tide as it sweeps me along. I turn for the beach and crab my way back to shore, beaching a 1/4 mile from where I got in the water. I'm exhilarated but exhausted. I'm satisfied but I want more.

When the sun was absent and the winds whipped the seas up in a frenzy she still called me there to watch her wild untamed dance.  Driving rain peppering my face
the wind wildly pushing at me, as every step closer to the sea is a bigger fight to keep my feet and gain ground. I get the feeling that as I'm straining so hard against the wind, if it stopped suddenly I would be hurled forward and land on my face. I could barely see where I was going as the wind and rain forced my eyes shut. The energy from the storm is so intense that I  feel it course right through my body as I stood on the hill for the shot below, astounded the sea had risen that much, I felt the reality that the right gust of wind and perhaps a rogue wave, could easily pluck me from my precarious perch,  was a very real possibility,  but I couldn't leave yet. I had to try and watch this incredible show a bit longer. Two long minutes went by with me fighting to keep my balance and then a powerful wind gust lifted all 220 lbs of me and thrust me backwards,  setting me down again precariously close to a sheer drop down a wall that had been behind me. I got my wake up call and was out of there like Jack the Bear. I left the seafront with the wind at my back hurrying me along without choice and steered well around any big trees in my path. I was soaked to the skin and the second I reached the High street, the sun came out and the storm was over. It was awesome.

The Sea Boiling Over Into Southsea Castle's Moat

I got to live that life for 4 years on the South Coast of England and it was everything I imagined it would be and more. I'm sure I could have gotten used to being there for the rest of my days.  It's just that life doesn't always go according to plan and maybe the time there was meant to end then.  Whatever it was,  I feel so blessed to have realized that dream if only a part of it and for a short time.  I had some of the most life enriching experiences there and met a lot of colorful people. I got to saturate myself in ancient history and experience for myself some of the places my ancestors roamed about and settled in. At times, places even seemed familiar that I had never visited. I was rarely without a camera and used it at every opportunity. I hope you enjoy some of these shots as much as I enjoyed taking them.

By the sea the days seem gentler and dreams come easy.  The sea runs right into your blood and becomes part of you. It speaks directly to your heart and soothes you to contentment. It's been awhile now since I became distant with her, but I know she is still there waiting for me and I hope to see her again soon. Atlantic, Pacific, it matters not which, only that my heart gets to swell again like her waves someday becoming a sight for tired eyes and a hungry soul.
