ONLY SEVENTEEN

AUGUST 2016
HITCHING RIDES THAT'S WHAT WE USED TO DO
TO GET TO THE PLACES WE WANTED TO
HIDING OUT IN THE DUNES BY THE SHORE
WITH SOME FRIENDS MAYBE THREE OR FOUR
PLAYING IN THE WAVES
MAKING OUR OWN HOLIDAY
AND WHEN THE NIGHT FALLS
THE FIRE ON THE BEACH BLAZES BRIGHT
THE SOUND OF THE WAVES CRASHING
LULLS ME TO SLEEP
MOVING ME ROCKING ME
CALLING ME FROM THE DEEP
ROLLING ME
SOMETIMES I RIDE HIGH ON A WAVE
SOMETIMES I'M SO LOW
JUST INCHES FROM A WATERY GRAVE
WE WERE SO GOOD AT BREAKING ALL THE RULES
WE COULD BE CRAZY CAREFREE FOOLS
WE WERE ONLY SEVENTEEN
WE WERE LOOKING FOR EVERYTHING
WE WERE HAVING FUN, CHASING THE SUN
WE NEVER STAYED IN ONE PLACE LONG
WE WERE EVERYWHERE WE COULD BE
SO MUCH TO DO, SO MUCH TO SEE
WHEN YOU'RE SEVENTEEN
SO MANY FEELINGS, THAT WE'VE NEVER FELT BEFORE
SOME LEFT US WANTING MORE
THOSE CRAZY CAREFREE FEELINGS
FOLLOWED ME FOR QUITE AWHILE
WHEN I LET GO I DIDN'T KNOW
THAT IT WOULD BE THE END
NEW THINGS BEGUN
NOTHING WOULD EVER BE THE SAME AGAIN
THOSE DAYS ARE GONE
BUT ONCE IN AWHILE
THEIR RIGHT HERE IN LIVING COLOR
SOMETHING OR OTHER, NAGGING AT MY SOUL
I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT
BEFORE IT TAKES IT'S TOLL
WHEN WE WERE ONLY SEVENTEEN
WE WERE LOOKING FOR EVERYTHING
I FEEL LIKE I'M STILL LOOKING
TO FIND THOSE THINGS AGAIN
THAT MADE ME FEEL SO ALIVE
