NATURAL FOLK REMEDIES STILL WORK

NATURAL FOLK REMEDIES STILL WORK

Written By : Jeffrey R Hilton

***
Today,  Good Day/Bad Day,  looks at natural centuries old folk medicines.  Don't be confused by the word folk.  It has a way of lending itself to things that may,  or may not be true,  such as in the case of the word,  FOLKLORE.  There's a good  reason that Natural Folk Remedies are still around and still an effective aid to both cure and prevent common ailments that have existed and affected man since the beginning of time.  They work !  Most of this stuff was discovered and known long before drug companies ever existed and people depended on these time proven remedies.  The early native tribes that roamed the plains,  the jungles and the mountains,  had a great knowledge of plants,  herbs and flowers and it was the job of the Tribal Medicine Man to oversee the collecting of these.  The Medicine Man,  would then process, prepare for use and store these valuable medicines. The natives knew that nature provides all necessary things to promote wellness.  Information on these plants was passed on from one generation to the next.

Early medicine men gathered up specimens of everything and experimented with them to identify and record what uses could be made of all the various specimens of flora.  Through the observation of wild animals,  using various plants and leaves.  Bears will often seek out Willow trees if they are having mouth pain associated with abscessed teeth and other oral problems.  They have been observed stuffing willow leaves into a cavity or tooth problem are and packing around it.  This is for the the high content of Salicin,  a natural drug that converts to Salicylic Acid that occurs in both the leaves and bark of willow and is used for stomach and body pain in general.  It's properties were recorded by Hippocrates,  the  ancient Greek Doctor in 5th century BC.  Salicin is the precursor to today's aspirin.

Arthritis,   is a malady that strikes almost everyone at some point in their life and it can be a real downer,  not to mention it's crippling effects.  If you have any form of arthritis Calcium supplements should be your fist stop.  Secondly,  Alfalfa is another time proven helper for the disease.  Alfalfa tea is an excellent way to get an intake of Alfalfa.  Just these two things alone should be enough to let you feel a difference in a few weeks of using these two remedies.  Vitamin C and E,  are also geared towards easing arthritic pain.  Halibut or Cod Liver Oils are also an excellent source for reducing swelling in joints.

Asthma,  and other respiratory afflictions,  can sometimes be cured or eased by taking vitamin A,  and B6,   supplements.

Bed Wetting,   among children is a fairly common thing,  but it can be bothersome to both parents and the child,  as well as an embarrassment.  There are a few natural remedies for this that some people swear work,  so one of them is to give the child a tablespoon of honey,  just before bed.  The honey acts as a sedative and honey attracts water,  retaining it in the body without straining the kidneys.  It's also a good idea to include cranberry juice in your child diet to stave off urinary,   bladder,  or kidney infections sometimes associated with bed wetting.  A lack of Magnesium can be cause for bed wetting.

Boils,  are a nasty affliction that's been around since before the early Egyptians,  I get the nasty little bugger's myself sometimes,   and they can be painful.   When I was younger,   my grandmother used to apply a bread and warm milk poultice to them and this almost always helped draw out the infection.  Putting milk soaked bread on your body sounds a bit gross and messy,  but you only need to hold it in place over the affected area overnight or apply for a half hour twice daily and you will have a result.  Use white bread and cover your bed sheet to prevent any mess if you are going to leave on overnight.
It's just a method for relief that is cheap and natural.  While various poultices may be effective,  an even more helpful and less messier solution is to apply vitamin E oil to the affected area,  and this will often clear them up.

ALOE VERA

Burns,  are never pleasant,  but the quicker they are treat them,  the less chance there is of permanent damage.  Minor burns should be immediately doused in cold water,  as this draws out the heat from the burn and helps prevent damage to the innermost layers of skin.  Never use ice,  as this can damage the skin further.  Aloe Vera is an excellent topical ointment that promotes healing and soothing of burns.  just buy an aloe plant and when some is needed,  just break off a section of a leaf and squeeze it onto the affected area.  Vitamin E cream also works.

Cold Sores and Cankers,  The easiest way to deal with these are to simply press and hold an ice cube onto the affected area for 45 minutes 5 times a day.  This will usually dry the infection.

Chicken Pox,  is never a pleasant thing and the painful itching is enough to drive anyone crazy. scratching can cause scarring very easily.  If your child has chicken pox,  rub honey on the affected areas,  leave it on the skin for awhile and then clean off. Often,  one application will relieve itching.  Calamine Lotion should also work.

Poor Circulation,  Vitamin E,  can greatly improve circulation problems.

Colds, are still not curable,  but cold prevention is definitely achievable.  Vitamin C is the number one cold prevention go to.  Taken regularly,  your chances of  colds lessen.
Garlic,  is another great tool both to prevent and ease cold symptoms.  Include garlic with everyday meals.  If you don't like garlic,  take it in capsule form.

Sore Throats,  can be eased with Horehound Tea or candies,  and is excellent to relieve congestion.  Honey is equally effective.

Colic,   in babies often lead to sleepless nights and Gripe Water is the modern go to,  but traditional cures that are just as effective have been used for years before there was any such thing as gripe water.  Catnip and or Peppermint leaves are steeped in boiled water and left to cool.  Add to baby's bottle and this will clear up baby's gassy tummy.  This is completely safe for babies.  The same drink can be made from 1 steeped Bay Leaf.

Coughing,  can be eased with a few lemon juice drops and a tablespoon of honey.

Cuts and Wounds, that are minor can be treated effectively with all sorts of remedies.  For a stubborn cut on your finger that won't stop bleeding,  in a pinch,  stick your finger into a cup of flour and leave it there for 5 minutes.  This should allow clotting to happen more easily and when you are finished,  rinse gently with cool water.  Apply Aloe Vera to cuts.  Applying a slice of Tomato to a cut can effectively relieve pain and promote healing.

Leg Cramps,  and charlie horses are no fun at 3 am in the morning,  and having to jump out of bed to try and walk them off and ease the tightened cramped muscles can be more than just a pain in your leg.  Calcium/Magnesium tablets taken twice weekly almost completely eliminate these cramps.  I myself suffered for years from this until I started taking these supplements.

Gall and Kidney Stones,  are not something to be taken lightly and should always involve seeing a doctor.  However,  for years,  people have found relief by drinking a few tablespoons of Cider Vinegar,  with an ounce of Virgin Olive Oil,    followed by a glass of Grapefruit Juice.

Gout,  the painful foot ailment can often be relieved by eating fresh cherries.

Hay Fever,  symptoms can be almost eradicated by eating lots of raw unrefined honey as Hay Fever season approaches.  Fenugreek Tea is also effective.

Hiccups,  nasty and annoying.  Cures abound and many are downright silly and less than effective.  The best cures I've ever heard that work for me are to stay still for a minute and make your breathing become as shallow as you can,  hardly breathing at all,   while remaining still.  Secondly,  a teaspoon of sugar put at the back of your tongue and left to dissolve,  then swallow gently often cures hiccups.

Today, there's no reason that Science and Naturopathy can't work together as a team,  and the latter can be equally or sometimes even more effective at curing,  preventing,   and treating,  disease,  illness,   and injury.  Any time you can use natural organics as an effective medicine over drugs,  is always a good thing.  While everyone's body is different in subtle ways,  so are they the same,  so some herbs and supplements may work better on some,  than others.  Experiment with what works for you,  and you might be pleasantly surprised how well these things work,  and often they are much cheaper than drugs.  Every region in the world has their own collections of local botanical's they have relied on for centuries,  and many of these countries still shun drugs over these remedies.

Seebe Dam Alberta ( Alberta Places )

Seebe,  Alberta  ( Alberta Places )

Written by : Jeffrey R Hilton

Seebe is a former hamlet in southern Alberta,  located on highway 1A West of Calgary
adjacent to Seebe Dam on the south side of the Bow River.  The former hamlet's existence,  owed to being set up for Calgary Power Company Limited for the purpose of housing some of it's employees.   The town site is closed now, and in it's last days,  it boasted no more than one small building that contained a post office,  general store,   and a cafe.   At one time,  Seebe was an important technical hub for remotely controlling 6 or more,  important water sheds.  Drainage from Lake Minewanka,  Spray River,  Ghost River,  Kananaskis River,  the Brazeau and even the North Saskatchewan River.  Seebe,  is a Cree word for river,  and across the river from Seebe is the Stony Indian Reserve.  Seebe is just downstream from the confluence of the Bow and Kananaskis,   rivers at Kananaskis Falls.  The Dam at Horseshoe Falls down stream was built first in 1911,  while Seebe Dam itself was built in 1913 and then expanded in 1951. The dam at Kananaskis Falls was built in 1929.

From September 29 1939 to January 28 1946,  there was a prisoner of war camp situated at Seebe that housed up to 200 inmates.  The camp was known as,   POW Camp No. 130.
Locals referred to it as " Camp-Kan-A-Nazi"   ( See Picture Of Camp Below  )  and it must have been a fairly nice camp to be in,  as far as POW camps go.  The view of both Mount Yamnuska and,   Pigeon Mountain are fabulous from Seebe.

Seebe,  at one time in the 70s and 80s was a magnet for Calgarians and nearby residents to swim,  picnic,  BBQ,    cliff dive and party.  Access was by driving over the dam on the flimsy access road perched on top of the dam which when finally closed,  spelled the end to a lot of fun and a great place to go on a summer day.  Fishermen are a common sight there still and cliff divers still frequent the place now as they did back then.  There was even a waterfall you could sit under or in and it was warm as the sun shone on the shallow water  before making it's way over the gentle falls.  Broken glass became a big issue at one time and the carelessness and disrespect for the land,  probably speeded up it's demise.

SEEBE WWII POW CAMP

A few movies have filmed scenes at Seebe. Kevin Costner's movie "Open Range" was filmed on the Stony land across the river in 2003 while Seebe was still inhabited.  A scene from " Broke Back Mountain" was also filmed there.  A proposal was made for sizable redevelopment of the former town site in,  2006-7,  but I don't think it ever got anywhere.  For now Seebe will remain quiet and nature will go on thriving in the area undeterred by much presence of man.  Evidence of it's interesting past is slowly disappearing,  so let this post stand as a historical record of it's past glory.

If My Father Was Still Alive

If My Father Was Still Alive

Written by : Jeffrey R Hilton

***
If my father was still alive,  I would tell him,  I love him more than he could ever know.  I would tell him that I am sorry that I didn't want to hold his hand,  as he took mine walking down our street together because,  I was 15 years old now !  I would tell him that his heart lives inside me still,  as sure as his blood runs through my veins.  I'd tell him that I've always admired him and try my best to help others selflessly as he did.  I would ask him more about his Dad,  and about his young life.  I would ask him if he still remembers letting me ride in the back window of the Volkswagen he once owned.   I would talk to my Dad about all the good times we had when I was growing up and share a good laugh over a beer.   I would tell him I was still impressed that he knew I unhooked his odometer and took the car for a joy ride when I wasn't supposed to.  I would tell my father that if I couldn't be more like him,  I was glad to at least be,   part of him.

I'd take my Father out to lunch and discuss current world events that are ever shaping the world and ask him if he ever thought he would see some of today's greatest inventions.  I'd tell him that I am grateful for his firmness with me,  when I needed it most.  I'd try to explain that I was young and impressionable and went against his good advice too many times.  I would ask him if there was anything I could do to make his life easier and comfortable in his advanced age.  I would thank him for all the things he taught me and for never beating or abusing me.  I know he would forgive me for the mistakes I've made and tell me,  it's what you do now and in the future that counts,  and to not to hold  onto and let past mistakes,  cloud my future.

If you have a father that was taken early in life,  and you still miss him, then share this post to pay homage to him.

If you are lucky enough to have a father,  that's still alive
show him the greatest respect and let him know that you love him with all your heart.
Sometimes the best people are taken from the world suddenly,  and better affirmations of the heart be spoken to the living,  than holding them inside for the departed where they may haunt your soul.

HOVERCRAFT ( The History Of )

Hovercraft ( The History Of )

Written by : Jeffrey R Hilton

The first Hovercraft was invented by Christopher Cockerell in 1956.  He invented the first commercial Hovercraft, the SRN 1.  Cockerell born in 1910,  worked first,  for a radio research company until 1935,  when he started on with the  Marconi Wireless Telegraph Company. During the war years, he worked on a team to develop radar.  He patented 36 of his ideas and was knighted,   "Sir Christopher Cockerell" in 1969.

The Hovercraft is simple a craft,  supported on a cushion of air supplied by powered fans or a fan mounted on the craft.  Hovercraft are used extensively throughout the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe.  They are not a safe mode of transportation in overly rough seas as they lose the ability to maintain a consistent cushion of air between the craft and the water.  Hovercraft passenger services are usually cancelled in rough weather.  having said that,  so are the big Car Ferries.  Below are a few pictures of various Hovercraft.

There are many types and sizes of Hovercraft,  and the crafts were designed and converted for military use during WWII.

The giant Hovercraft seen in the photo below is a car ferry that used to ferry people and cars back and forth between England and France,  using the Channel.  The service was eventually cancelled due to the high cost of keeping fuel in the less than fuel efficient craft.  This photo below is at the only known Hovercraft Museum in the world, at HMS, Daedalus,  former RAF, Air Base in Lee On  Solent,  Hampshire, U.K.   When the Seaplanes were based there in 1911,  they had to be transported to the beach for launch as there was no slipway leading from the base to the beach below until a few years later.  I worked at HMS Daedalus in 1996 and was amazed by all the Hovercrafts displayed at the museum.

If you ever get a chance to travel by Hover, don't pass it up,  it's a fun way to travel and relatively fast.  I've taken this hover to the Island and back a few times while living in Southsea,   and I was never disappointed.  The Hovercraft lands in Ryde on The Isle Of Wight.  It's a summer vacation mecca for anyone and everyone and was home to more than 142,500 permanent residents,  as of 2011.   The Hovercraft station is in Southsea at the Clarence Pier,  and a trip to the Isle Of Wight to explore it's many seaside towns or just stay in Ryde is a great place for a summer holiday.

MOTORWAY MADNESS

Motorway Madness

Written by : Jeffrey R Hilton

If you've ever driven in the U.K. as a Canadian or an American,  you may well relate to this story.  When I first moved to England,  I exchanged my Canadian Driving license for an English one.   The stipulation was that I was only able to drive an automatic transmission or as they say in "Ole Blighty",   a manual.  This was because I couldn't prove that I knew how to drive both manual and automatic and have always done so,  but our Canadian licences do not indicate this oversight.  If I wanted to drive a manual,  I would have needed to take all driving tests over again from the beginning,  including the written test,  and after England revamped their entire test,  I heard many English citizens say themselves that they probably couldn't pass the new test,  so I was content to drive an automatic car over not driving at all or taking the new dreaded test.

As Wild As It Gets

Like anyone that's never driven on the opposite side of the car and road, it was a challenge to get used to,  and roundabouts were a scary thing until I got used of how they worked.  I had a job interview in another town not far from Southsea where I lived.  My appointment was early on a Monday morning and I studied the route beforehand as best I could and was prepared as I was going to be by Monday.  I started the car up and headed through Portsmouth to the Motorway.  It was very foggy and this didn't bode well with me and the uncertainty of the whole thing.  By the time I got on the motorway,  the fog was so thick,  I was a bit frightened by it,  and coupled with my insecurity of not knowing my way around,  I was wound up like a cheap Japanese watch as I drove carefully as I could,  barely being able to see 5 feet ahead of me.

On The Morning Of This Drive, The Fog Was Much Thicker Than This

This was getting scary and I knew I must be getting close to the exit I needed and strained my eyes trying to spot the exit.  After a few minutes,  I slowed down a bit and all of a sudden,  I barely made out the exit sign,  just as I was driving past it.  Unable to take the exit now,  I may as well have driven off the edge of the world,  as that's the sinking feeling I had as I saw that exit passing by and was helpless to do anything but keep going. Panic set in as I tried to work out how I would be able to find my way back to the exit.  Eventually,  I found another exit up the road and took it into another small village where I turned around and stopped a minute to regain my composure enough to try again.

Well, I got there eventually,  but I swear my hands were welded to the steering wheel and my hair was a bit grayer.  Talk about stress.  On another occasion, I was driving to work on an old air force base and decided to continue down the road a little farther than my turn off into the base to go to a petrol station. It was only 5:30 am,  and the road was quiet without any traffic. I got to the station and it was closed,  so I turned around and headed back to the base.  When I was almost there,  I suddenly realized I had pulled onto the road and had continued on the wrong side of the road.  This flash of realization jolted me into action and I moved into the proper side of the road,  just seconds before the road divided. Thankfully there were no cars coming at me,  and I breathed a sigh of relief as I pulled onto the base road.  This was the only time I ever inadvertently drove on the wrong side of the road in 4 years of English driving.

Magic Roundabout In Swindon

I once received a visitor from Canada, who rented a van when he got there and had driven from Gatwick Airport in London to Portsmouth and picked me up.  I mentioned roundabouts to him and said I would instruct him in the art of driving through a roundabout.  Just as the words left my mouth,  he drove through a roundabout and I was slightly taken aback as he said,  " Roundabout,  Oh is that what that was? "

I never had an accident while there thankfully,  but driving in the U.K. is somewhat challenging for a Canadian.  Many of the streets are only passable for one car at a time and as you pull onto one of these streets,  you must stop and wait if any cars are already coming down the road the opposite way.  Many of the streets are so plugged with parked cars that by the time you park your car,  most of the cars on the street are parked so close to each other,  you could barely put a pencil between 2 cars bumpers.
